🏭Here's a sneak peek at one of our upcoming feature stories by our Social Media Editor @madalynblairr. She dives into how Piketon became a pivotal player in nuclear energy and the lasting effect it’s had on the community.

The Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant (PORTS) in Piketon produced enriched uranium until 2001, but the fight didn’t stop there. In 2023, the American Centrifuge Plant announced plans to begin enriching uranium on the same site.

For over 40 years, former electrician Vina Colley has been an outspoken advocate for the plant to be properly cleaned up. She’s not alone; many former workers and lifelong residents are suffering from health issues linked to unsafe chemical exposure at the site.

Operations engineer Paul Mobley is someone helping Colley. He is gathering data to assess contamination levels around the plant, as the community continues to fight for accountability 🔯.

These sacred sites—crafted in huge squares, circles and octagons—are perfectly aligned with the sun and moon cycles, once serving as gathering places for Hopewell people and Native American tribes from all over North America.

In 2023, these ancient sites were honored as Ohio’s first @unesco World Heritage site! And here’s exciting news: As of Jan. 1, Newark's Octagon Earthworks is open to the public for the first time ever!

Our department editor @kendallkwright is working on an incredible story about the @southernohiowolfsanctuary! 🐺

The sanctuary was founded in 2014 after seeing so many wolf dogs needing rescue and loving homes. It all started when John DeBoard, the sanctuary's owner, adopted his first wolf dog, Cheyenne (the stunning white wolf-dog pictured), in 2013.

Now, the pack has grown to 27 wolf-dogs, including 7-year-old Mayhem (check out the last slide)! 🐾 Stay tuned for more about these amazing creatures and the sanctuary's mission! #wolfdogrescue #southernohiowolfsanctuary #wolfdogs

Mike Bartrum originally from Meigs County ended up as the long snapper for the Philadelphia Eagles after graduating from near by Marshall University. He hosted a football camp in West Virginia and used the funds to support the Meig’s high school athletic department.
